Chief grew up on the banks of the Yellowstone, running wild in the wind-swept hills and volcanic canyons of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. With her brother she learned to track, stalk, fish, and hunt. Her own interests drew her to the earth and all things that grow. She learned by osmosis the lessons of cactus, leaf, root, and berry. Maria Treben, Tom Brown, and Stephen Harrod Buhner filled in the gaps.
